On 28th December 2013 I will be rowing the full marathon distance - that's 42,195 meters - on the Concept 2 Rowing Ergometer. I will be joined on the day by two friends - Elliot Stewart and David Vaughan - and we will try to get through it together.

 

The reason for this self-imposed torture is not just to trim the Christmas waistlines.  It is to raise some money for Cure Leaukaemia.

  

In October 2007, my brother Andy died of leukaemia. He was 46, a brilliant musician and well-known on the West Midlands music circuit.     

 

He was treated by Professor Charlie Craddock, one of the country’s leading blood and bone marrow specialists and although Andy did not survive, Professor Craddock has saved many other people's lives. 

 

When he is not running the Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, he runs Cure Leukaemia, a charity devoted to supporting research into treatments and cures for this horrible disease. Cure Leukaemia uses donations to fund clinical trials of new treatments meaning that every pound donated goes directly to treating patients with the latest drugs.
