My story

Last year I ran the Marathon de Paris and with your help, Paul and I raised over 30k for Crohn's and Colitis UK.  This year we're back and I'll be running the London Marathon whilst Paul has his feet up - again!

But for those of you who are unaware, Paul has suffered from Crohn's for the last 15 years and has had four major operations, although now he is in remission.

Although anecdotally it was the broken ankle he suffered in a Lotus Elise when he crashed head on with a Lorry at Old St roundabout that prevents him running a marathon, given he has a slightly shorter leg now and he tells me he'd run in a circle.

Crohn's Disease

It affects approximately 60,000 people in the UK, that’s about 1 in 1000

Between 3,000 and 6,000 new cases are diagnosed each year

Research shows that the number of people with Crohn’s Disease has been rising steadily, particularly among young people.

Common symptoms of Crohn’s:

·     Intestinal bleeding

·     Intestinal ulceration

·     Inflammation

·     Nausea

·     Vomiting

·     Diarrhoea

·     Abdominal pain

·     Fever

·     Chronic fatigue

That’s just for starters.  Once the disease really gets going, these are some of the things the patient can look forward to:

·     Bowel obstructions

·     Abscesses

·     Necrotic tissue

·     Ruptured intestines

·     Fistulas (a tunnel between one organ and another, including the skin)

·     Septicaemia

There are over 100 ailments associated with Crohn’s such as osteoporosis, arthritis, cancer, mouth and eye inflammation, gallstones and erythema nodosum (painful inflammation / ulceration of the skin).
