Horrified at the prospect of yet another expedition to some far-flung corner of the globe, David, Liz, Camilla, Gerry, Jan and Martin have decided that this year’s destination shall be the relatively benign kingdom of Ethiopia. We hear that visitors are not shot at on too frequent a basis and that they serve a damn fine cup of coffee in – reason enough to dust off the old carpet bags and hitch down to Heathrow.
‘Bully for you!’ we hear you cry, ‘but what’s the catch?’
Well, for reasons known only to ourselves, we’ve decided to forsake the usual format of poking around ancient temples and trading beads with spear-brandishing natives and have elected to do some voluntary work at a hospital. The healers amongst us are going to tend to the sick whilst those of us who go a bit wobbly at the sight of bodily fluids issuing from where they oughtn’t are going to lend a hand with some small-scale construction projects.
We don’t know how much you know about but suffice to say, it’s not one of the G8 leading industrialised nations and remarkably, the healthcare system is actually in a worse state than ours. The hospital we are visiting is run by a charity and not surprisingly, they are in desperate need of donations in order to carry on the work that they do. Surgical paraphernalia is in short supply and the crumbling infrastructure is in dire need of some tlc.
This is where we very much hope you can assist. Whilst we’ve broken open the piggy banks to fund the trip and are giving of our time for free, we thought it would be a good idea to have a bash at raising some funds at the same time in order to purchase much-needed items to take with us and to donate any surplus to the hospital.
So, whether you want to have a dig down behind the sofa cushions or pawn the Rembrandt that’s hanging in the loo, any contributions would be most welcome.
Please bung us your bunce, whizz us your wonga, mail us your moohlah and send us your spondoolicks - call it what you like but remember; there are no pockets in a shroud and ‘tis far better to give than to receive (and it makes you feel all good about yourself deep down inside).
Thank you for your support and we promise to let you know how it all went when we get back!
