My story

Until last year, I had never cycled 50 miles. In late summer, with 10 others, I cycled from John O’Groats to Land's End. It was hard work, but an amazing journey of 1,030 miles with a cumulative climb of 58,000 feet. We raised £230,000 for research on palliative and end of life care.

So here we go again! This year, the other 'End to End', from Cape Wrath to Dover. At around 1,100 miles and with tougher terrain, even bigger challenge.

I will raise funds to change opportunities for children and young adults in low income households, helping more into further and higher education. Everything raised will support programmes to change expectations and raise aspirations in primary and secondary school children, who would otherwise consider University beyond their reach. They will also support scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

I know from personal experience that education transforms lives, partly because as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham I see the difference higher education makes to thousands of young people each year. But even more so, because of my background. I grew up in Shettleston in the east end of Glasgow, going to school at Shettleston Primary, Thorntree Primary and Eastbank.

Few young people from Shettleston get the opportunity to go to College or University. So I feel passionately about creating opportunities for others, especially those lacking the means, financial or otherwise and wherever they are, to benefit from further and higher education.

I have set myself an ambitious fundraising target, the more I can raise, the more lives we can change. I hope I can count on your support.
