Story
Our 6 man team ( called RVT at the moment)are preparing to take part in a 24 hour karting challenge at the world famous Le Mans circuit in France to raise money for The Road Victims Trust.
The Road Victims Trust provides support for the bereaved, and people otherwise affected by death, or life-changing injuries, who are resident in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire they seek to fill the gap in available specialist help by providing support for the bereaved, and people otherwise affected by fatal road traffic collisions.
The service is provided by a team of highly trained, highly skilled and highly committed volunteers, supported by a small professional staff.
The service provides much needed information and practical support. But the ethos of RVT is to offer more than this. The service is underpinned by emotional support, by human contact, by engaging with the victims at the point of crisis.
This allows the victims to feel heard, to prepare for the events to follow and to start to think through, and beyond, what has happened to them. The early contact lays the foundation so that in the future the support can be used to work through the awful pain.
My family and I know first hand what a wonderful job the RVT carry out having lost our 17 year old son/brother on 9 September 2011 in a motorbike accident, so please dig deep and donate today to help us reach this target
About the Event
The race starts at 12 noon Saturday 6 July and finishes at 12 noon the following day, taking place on the kart circuit called ‘Circuit Alain Prost’ which is situated inside the actual Le Mans circuit. The twin-engined pro karts we’ll be racing reach speeds of up to 70 mph and the race itself is physically very demanding and challenging but we know that families having lost a close family member go through far greater challenges which is why we have chosen to support the Road Victims Trust.
We’ll take turns to do 2 hours stints in the kart, only stopping to quickly refuel and change drivers. 24hrs and around 1,500 laps later we’re hoping to finish in the top 15 of the 40 kart field. One member of our racing club at Daytona Raceway, Gary Philips, has previous experience finishing 12 in the event in 2012 "The last time I took part in this event I literally had to be lifted out of the kart after each stint. My fingers seized up, my bruises had bruises and it took me 3 days to recover!"
Needless to say we’re not looking forward to the uncomfortable drive home, but we hope that the satisfaction of knowing that we’ve helped raise some money for a very worthwhile cause will ease the pain from those bruises just a little.
