Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I've decided to take the plunge, get on my bike and run in a triathlon for charity. I would appreciate your support and encouragement by sponsoring me. I've never done this before but the two causes are educational, worthy and along with the exercise, good for my health and wellbeing whilst making a difference to some of the most underpriveleged families in Latin America and Jamaica (more on this second project later).
The first cause is Project Peru which is a UK-based registered charity which works directly with their project partner in Peru. Its aims are to provide financial and material support, while at the same time encouraging voluntary effort and raising awareness of development issues in a Latin American context. The Project was founded in 1992 as an Anglo-Peruvian effort to address some of the enduring issues that Peru faces. It focuses on a tangible initiative that has a potential to reflect both the immediate and longer term needs of its beneficiaries. They always try to respond to the expressed needs in the light of the social, economic and political climate in Peru and only use 4% of monies raised for administration so the other 96% goes to the project. The focal point of the Project in Peru is at Zapallal, near Lima, where they have established a refuge from poverty and disadvantage. They regularly provide food, shelter and support for children and families in need. They also distribute a variety of supplies both in the refuge and the interior of Peru. Further details can be found at http://www.projectperu.org.uk/
In addition, Leeds Metropolitan University have established a volunteering partnership with the project and will be sending a second cohort of students and staff to Peru from the12th September - 18th October 2008 where volunteers will be working with the children and and carrying out some building work. Each volunteer will need to raise a specified amount of funding to support their trip and they will need further assistance with this - details can be found at http://www.leedsmet.ac.uk/internationalvolunteering/index_Peru2009.htm
