We are a family who live and work in Mold, Flintshire and would like to introduce you to our son, Dean.

He was born in October 2006. He has an older sister Eve and they have both made our family truly complete. In April 2010 we were given the most devastating news that any parent could receive, we were told that Dean had cancer. When the diagnosis was made we were told he had Neuroblastoma Stage IV High Risk.

This is an extremely aggressive cancer, which affects around 100 children in the UK a year. Dean was given only a 20% chance of survival, at diagnosis. As if this wasn’t bad enough when Dean went for his first chemotherapy session, we were told his prognosis had worsened, as they discovered the cancer in some of his bones.

Since that day Dean has defied the odds set against him, during 14 months of treatment. He endured intense chemotherapy, a 6 hour operation to remove the primary tumour from his adrenal gland, stem cell harvest and transplant where he contracted a life threatening liver disease, radiotherapy and anti-body treatment apart from countless blood and platelet transfusions, alongside numerous biopsies, scans and tests.

During his treatment there have been very dangerous times and on several occasions we were told there was no guarantee on his survival. He has suffered months of not being able to walk due to some of the chemotherapy drugs which also permanently damaged some of his hearing. Dean stopped eating during 9 months of his treatment and he had to tolerate a feeding tube.

Since treatment has finished Dean has learned to eat again. Dean maintained such strength and charisma throughout his ordeal and has now been cancer free since June 2011, he enjoys life and is a right handful at times, like any 5 year old. He loves school. He is very sociable and loves to play. Just to see him running around, so full of life now, is truly amazing and inspiring for us to see.

Even though he is cancer free at the moment we live in fear, as the chances of Dean having a relapse at any age is far greater than staying cancer free (80%). It is with this statistic that we feel that we need to be prepared for the future. This is why we have set up this fund as there is currently no curative treatment protocol available in the UK for relapsed Neuroblastoma. We need to be able to give Dean a chance to survive and be able to go overseas for the right treatment if the situation arose. Treatment options abroad are generally in America and Germany where treatment costs can be as much as £500,000.

Families Against Neuroblastoma is a registered charity that helps families like ours raise the huge sums needed, but rely heavily on the generosity and support of the general public, especially our local community. Together we hope that with your help we will raise the funds in good time so Dean can have a second chance should he need it.

Thank you, Jane & Tony – Dean's Mum & Dad

A donation to a child's individual appeal will be held for the sole use of that child for treatment and access to that treatment. Should the child no longer need the money raised in their name, funds will either become available to other children within the charity, moved to our emergency fund, donated to Neuroblastoma research, donated to our general fund, or a combination of all four, as agreed with the family.
