Thanks to everyone who sponsored me on the L'Etape du Tour in July 2010. Every single penny of your money went towards the mission to Carpenter, northern Ghana in November 2010. For two weeks we worked flat out to try and complete as many operations as could physically manage. The total figure for the mission were178 hernia repairs, 32 hydroceles and lipomas, making a total of 206 surgical procedures.
Magdi Hanafy from Leighton hospital lead the team of surgeons and nurses from Italy, Plymouth, Toronto and Crewe. The appreciation of the people we operated on was astounding and once again we were humbled by Ghanaian kindness and gentle manners.
The report of this mission can be read at http://www.operationhernia.org.uk/page11.htm
Having a hernia repaired in this part of the world is rare due to profound poverty, lack of medical resources and limited access to health professionals. As a result hernias accumulate over the years both in number and size. Some of the hernias we have seen and operated on have been huge and very debilitating. In Ghana, if a person is unable to work due to a hernia, no income comes into the family resulting in a cycle of further poverty and deprivation.
Operation Hernia changes the lives of many people who otherwise would never be able to afford or have access to surgery. Thank you so much for your help.
