Story
In 1884 Jocelyn Devas, a graduate of University College Oxford, started a ‘club for working lads’ in a room over a coffee tavern in Battersea. Although he tragically died in a climbing accident in Zermatt in 1885, his father asked his college friends to carry on this youthwork.
Today the Devas Club is the largest youth club in Battersea, providing facilities and opportunities for generations of young people, particularly in the creative arts. Programmes include dance, music, art, screen printing, cooking, IT and film editing.
The club works in close partnership with Wandsworth Council who provide the key youth staff as well as training and advice. Devas also works with specialist providers such as The Sam Hawkins School of Dance and Clapham House Print and Bigfoot Theatre.
The Council has funded a major redevelopment of the ground floor providing a new teaching kitchen, art room, performance and exhibition space, and enlarged courtyard and entrance. These exciting new facilities are due to be complete this month. There is so much more that needs to be done and we need your help.
We thank you for any donations you can give.
