For those of you who know me well, would not think of me as sporty so you may be surprised to see I am taking part in a triathlon! James' rugby club were looking for volunteers to enter this charity event to raise funds for the Emily Ash Trust which had been set up by a close family friend of one of the members. There was a lot of enthusiasm at the club from team players and their famillies so this old crock and another formed the 'Hopefuls'- recruiting a younger, fitter Heidi along the way. I'm the cyclist, which has been a challenge because even my bike was in too poor a state to cope with the training let alone the actual event! Believe me after a long cycle ride today leaving me rather saddle sore the name 'Hopefuls' is very appropriate!
A little about the charity we are raising finds for:
The purpose of the Trust is to help improve the lives of children who are suffering from cancer. This is not solely isolated to helping the children directly, but also in improving the lifestyle of the family unit or guardians who are supporting a child. ~ Peter Yates (Chairman)
Whilst excellent medical assistance is provided through the care network, it was clear that this terrible disease had far wider effects on the sufferer and the family supporting those who are sick. Inspired by Emily who had been suffering from leukaemia for some years, it was decided to help raise funds to improve the quality of life for these children.
We provide help and resources with the aim of improving the quality of life of children and young adults suffering with cancer and their families. The Trust focuses its help in various ways, including:
- Laptops, walkie-talkies etc, enabling communication during treatment.
- A free holiday home facility.
- Pamper Days at Topshop.
- Pamper Days at The Royal Marsden
- Sibling days
Having experienced a serious illness in the family I know how upsetting it can be for all family members. However watching your child undergoing unpleasant treatments over a long period of time must be even more distressing. Hopefully any funds raised by me and the other paticipants will bring a little light into these brave children's lives and that of their families.
