Thanks for taking the time to visit my "7-in-7" JustGiving page.
Well I decided to do something. A cross-country run. A really good cross-country run, not the type we endured (and hated) during our time at school, 'marshalled' by an enthusiastic games teacher determined to get us bursting our lungs on a drizzly Wednesday afternoon straight after lunch!
Anyway, my cross-country run was just that. A cross 'country' run, the country being England. It ended up being 190 miles across some of the most beautiful but difficult terrain. The run was a little punishing for the first 2 days as I genuinely now believe that the lake district is not, I repeat not designed to be run across!!! However, after the legs and feet got used to the stress they were being put under, I think I faired ok. The route was 190 miles, often long lonely ones, but I actually ended up completing it in 6 days... that's averaging just over 31 and a half miles per day. I suppose that it nullifies the "7-in-7" concept really but who cares??!?!!
Why do this? Well unfortunately last year was a pretty bad one. I lost my mum in March and then my brother in July - both to the dreaded "C." My brother did the coast to coast as a walk a couple of years ago and raved about it so I decided initially to do it in his memory. However, I thought I'd raise a few quid for a charity that I know he would be ok with and that mum would support and, that I truly believe in...
The work done by the team at the Donna Louise Trust is truly incredible. Vicky and I visited them to see what goes on and they are a real lifeline for not just the children that they care for, but their whole family. They are providing essential support to around 160 families across Staffordshire and South Cheshire at the moment. Sadly, they have recently been forced to close for a couple of nights a week due to the "squeeze" that has hit most businesses (not to mention all of us) this last year or so. I think that is sad, really sad. I hadn't thought about recessionary times affecting local charities - but it has so I hope you can find a few spare quids to donate to a worthy cause.
