Thanks to everyone that's donated so far, watch out for runner number 47968!
Hi,
Thanks for visiting my JustGiving page, if you're here you probably already know that I'm running the 2010 Virgin London Marathon. If you know me, you will also know that I am not a runner, I was not born a runner, I never thought I would be planning to run 26.2 miles around the the streets of London on a fine Sunday in April.
However, just over four years ago, my Dad was admitted to St Georges hospital in Tooting, requiring emergency brain surgery to remove fluid that was gradually seeping onto his brain. We're lucky, we live pretty close to St Georges, and the Atkinson Morley wing that is attached to it. This is a state of the art Neuro and Cardio facility that attracts the best surgeons from the world over, and treats patients from across the UK.
Nothing is ever simple, the surgery went well, but there was another one on the way and a considerable amount of time in the ICU ahead as well, but the fantastic work that the doctors and nurses do in this amazing facility day in day out meant that today Dad is not only still alive, but completely recovered. We have them to thank for this entirely.
St Georges is an NHS trust, and as such funded by our unique health system, but unfortunately this funding is not enough. I will be running in aid of St Georges and the Atkinson Morley wing in part to say thank you, but also to attempt to go some way to make up this shortfall, to fund extra equipment, and also make the hospital a nicer place to be for patients, visitors, doctors and nurses who spend so much of their time there.
Whatever you can give will be much appreciated, and nothing is too little. In the new year, you will start hearing from myself and my mate Dunc, who is also running with news and events to help this fund, from domanddunc.com.
Please take the time to come and see the website in the new year, and thank you in advance for your support.
Above there is a picture of me not running, this will be replaced by one in my kicks and some tight lycra gear soon, beware!
Dom
