This July 2010, I will be volunteering for four months with Help 2 Educate, a small UK charity that raises money to care for and fund the education of former child labourers in Nepal.
They try to reach the neediest children and give them a brighter future away from poverty. These children come from families working in stone quarries, brick kilns and coal mines and have to work in dangerous and unhealthy environments. Some of the children were beaten at home, some have no parents, whilst others have no permanent home. This is no fault of the family but symptomatic of the poverty that they face. Consequently, the children Help 2 Educate supports live in Little Gems Hostel where they are provided with care and education.
In Nepal it is difficult to get a well paid job without speaking English. As a result, there is a tremendous pressure for children to learn English and intense competition between schools to demonstrate that they can offer English as a medium of study.
