With pro bono support from Davis Langdon and engineering firm Arup, Sabre have designed a new prototype kindergarten school for Ghana, which will be built on sustainable principles, at low cost and most importantly in response to teaching principles contained in the governments curriculum.
A pilot school is currently being built, in the and once proven, the design will be rolled out to other communities. Dwabor was identified by the Government as being one of the communities most in need of a new school - the picture of the current school (in the photo section of this website) shows how great their need is! From the architects impression of the new school (also in the photo section of this website) you can see just what an improvement the new building will provide.
As well as building new schools, the Sabre Trust is furnishing them with appropriate furniture, supplying teaching and learning materials and supporting the teachers through a classroom based coaching scheme.
Members of the Dwabor Volunteers dragon boat team have been supporting this pilot scheme, either through helping with the construction on site or fundraising to help build the construction of this & future schools.
Kindergarten schooling became compulsory in 2007, but historically, the sector has been woefully underfunded. In many communities there are no dedicated classrooms, the children are taught under trees by community teachers who have never received any formal training and without even basic government funding, no learning resources are available for the children’s use.
The case for investing in kindergarten teaching is compelling, with many young Ghanaians beginning primary school without a solid foundation in literacy or numeracy, which in turn leads to high failure rates and children being held back, year after year.
Your donation will help fund the roll out of this new school to other rural communities desperately in need of these facilities and help build a better future for school children in .
