Thank you to all my sponsors!!
I had an interesting weekend in Cologne and completed the half marathon in 1 hour and 49 minutes.
My plan to run the full marathon fell apart, as although this was the race I entered, the advertised start time was 08.30 and therefore I had booked the flight home for 16.25. However the actual marathon started at 12.00, as it was preceded by a half marathon, skate marathon, wheelchair marathon and schools marathon!! Unfortunately the logistics made this impossible and the option of a flight change was explored but would have been extremely costly! I hope all my kind sponsors will understand!! I am disappointed I did not live up to my pledge to run a full marathon and have decided to try again! I have entered the Paris Marathon in April 2010 and intend to keep fundraising for HEROS. Thank you again for all the sponsorship I have received, it is very much appreciated.
MY STORY
I have run the Cologne half marathon on 4th October 2009 and intend to run the Paris Marathon in April 2010 to support HEROS - a charity for re-homing ex-racehorses. My motivation has arisen due to the role in HEROS in avoiding the euthanasia of a beautiful, young thoroughbred mare we trained as a point-to-pointer for 2 seasons. Tilly unfortunately sustained a tendon injury which appeared not to be healing after a period of rest. With her being a windsucker and not a novice ride our options were running out. I spoke to HEROS who were very reassuring about her prospects and agreed to take her for rehabilitation and eventually re-homing.
We visited HEROS and were impressed and inspired by their expertise, attitudes and facilities. Every horse is treated as an individual and given the time they need to fulfill their potential. They are not rushed or "written off". I felt convinced that it was the right place for Tilly, and very hopeful for her future.
For the work of this excellent charity to continue they need support. We have to pay £2000 to for Tilly to go and whilst my credit card has carried a deposit I am unable to afford the full amount. HEROS have been very supportive and although the full figure is not essential, vets fees alone may add up to figures in excess of this, not to mention maintanence costs. Any support you could afford will be very gratefully received.
If you have enjoyed watching horse racing or any equestrian discipline and have any emotion towards such beautiful and generous animals please give generously.
Thank you very much.
ABOUT HEROS
HEROS (Homing Ex-Racehorses Organisation Scheme) is a charity dedicated to ensuring former racehorses have a future when their racing days are over. HEROS re-trains and re-homes these former athletes, ensuring that they have a long, happy and useful life when they move onto "pastures new".
Every year thousands of racehorses leave the sport due to injury, old age or a lack of ability. But retirement from racing does not have to mean the end.
HEROS aims to carefully match horses to their new careers and owners across all the equestrian disciplines and provides advice and ongoing support on all aspects of care and resettlement.
