My story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My name is Eddie Sedgemore and I currently hold the record for the furthest distance covered on an Electric Bicycle. During June 2009 I set the record covering 1912.1 miles in 28 days. My journey took me from Lands End in the southwest of England to Lowestoft, the most easterly point in England, via Ardnamurchan Point, the most westerly point in Scotland and John O'Groats at the far northeastern tip of Scotland.
My aim is to break this record. When I set off from Lands End on 12th May 2012 I will be hoping to cover 2012 miles in 26 days. My route will be slightly less convoluted as I will be heading for John O'Groats, where I will turn around and head back to Lands End. This will be the first time I have ever tried to do the trip "There and Back", but it's a challenge I am looking forward to.
The original plan was to do this ride in September 2011, however after three days the decision was taken to stop and postpone the event untill spring 2012, due to concerns about the weather conditions at the time. I really wanted to continue, but it was felt that my safety should come first
This will be my 6th (and 7th) End to End. In addition to my previous jaunt by Electric Bicycle, I have also cycled 3 times and several years ago, I set my first record when I did the journey on a Push Scooter. I am also a member of the Lands End - John O'Groats Association.
I have decided this time to help raise funds for jole rider (Pronounced Jolly) who are an Educational Charity working in The Gambia. A large part of their work involves collecting unwanted bicycles from various sources in the U.K. to send to Gambian schools. Some students often live a long way from the schools they attend and currently have to walk for 2 or more hours either side of a day in class. The schools loan bicycles to these students to enable them to get to school quicker. They also arrive less tired at school.
Before being shipped over to The Gambia the bicycles go to one of several prisons in the U.K. for refurbishment, in a small way, also helping to rehabilite prisoners. jole rider has also helped to facilitate links between schools in the U.K. and The Gambia.
jole rider has also been active in providing books and furniture for Gambian schools and they have a successful working partnership with the Gambian Education Authorities.

For thousands of children in Africa, having a bike from jole rider means they are getting an education. Without a bike, they would still be walking miles in searing heat, arriving at school exhausted. We also deliver books and other education resources to schools to boost learning and literacy.
