Though I enjoyed running at school and during my diplomatic career often ran along the corridors of the Foreign Office to meet Ministerial deadlines, I have never run a marathon before. Running in this April’s London marathon will be a major but thrilling challenge for me - something completely new and different - at the age of 71.

Why am I doing it? 

My granddaughter, Agnes, aged 7 is autistic. A beautiful little girl, I want her - and so many like her - to have a real opportunity, as you and I have had, to grow up and enjoy a normal life of independence, ambition and fulfilment.  Every day is a challenge for her - the uncertainty of what it might throw at her makes her worry. She does not seek pity; she wants to be understood. Agnes sees the world very differently from you and me. What she desires more than anything is to be accepted and just fit in. Ambitious about Autism is dedicated to raising money to find answers so that all those with autism, like Agnes, have this chance in life. After an enriching career and many lucky breaks, I have decided supporting Ambitious about Autism is the best way for me to give something back. That is why I am running the marathon for them. My training, which started in April last year, is now at a more challenging stage - training not just mid-week but also at the weekend. 

Training early on dark mornings in cold and unpleasant weather is hard and it takes longer to get brain and legs synchronised. But, once running, commitment and momentum take over. My excellent trainer, Chris Langley-Walen, continues to provide highly professional advice and supervises my running programme.

My other key challenge is to build strong support for what I am doing - essential with the marathon only a few weeks away. My target is to raise at least £5,000 to donate to Ambitious about Autism. To do this, Agnes and I need your personal commitment.

I am determined to succeed in this important project. Autism has to be defeated, so that, children, like Agnes, can have a normal life. Please therefore support me - and Agnes - as generously as you can in this personal endeavour.
