My story

Inspired By People is working together with a non-government organisation, Kopila Nepal (www.kopilanepal.org.np) to build a Trauma Recovery Centre in western Nepal. In Nepali the word ‘kopila’ means flower bud, something delicate that needs nurturing and protecting until it comes into flower. Trauma is about the loss of hope and dreams as is so much of the events we find challenging in our lives. I have worked with people experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder following the London Bombings, the shootings in Cumbria and with young people seeking asylum from war torn countries. The stories I have heard put me in touch with the fragility and vulnerabilities of life, how what we know and believe to be true can be taken away from us at any moment. Here in the UK if we experience a traumatic event we are lucky enough to have access to free social support and psychological therapy however this is not the case in Nepal.

The Trauma Recovery Centre enables people who suffer from mental health problems to have access to treatment and therapy services. Kopila Nepal’s vision is “to make sure that the most marginalized women and children in working areas are able to enjoy their fundamental human rights and psychosocial wellbeing.” Their work also includes an outreach programme and a youth programme which through drama and art helps children and adults to become aware of problems such as domestic violence, sexual abuse and mental health issues. As well as challenging the stigma associated with mental health problems which results in many people being victimised and discriminated against. Kopila Nepal needs on-going financial support to enable its community to have access to free mental health services in the same way that we in the UK are lucky enough to have.
