As many of you will know, my dear friend Camilla Milbank was seriously injured in a fall on the Newmarket gallops on Saturday, 25th July. After surgery to repair her broken neck at Addenbrooke's in Cambridge, she has been transferred to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where she is likely to be for quite a while as she undergoes physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

It will be a great personal sadness that Camilla will not be at my 40th birthday party but perhaps the occasion can be put to good use. If you were thinking of buying me a birthday present, please don't. I'd be much happier if you donated some money to the Stoke Mandeville Spinal Foundation (registered charity number 1116574).
