Hi Everyone
The Dwabor project has been delayed for a further 8 weeks and desparately need volunteers so me and Steve have decided to go!!
Our time out there will be spent labouring on the site and learning about the community and its culture, as well as spending some time with the kindergarten pupils. We will be staying in a community guest house a short distance away from the Kindergarten site and with other volunteers. The pictures on this page show you what the classroom used to be like and what the classroom will be like when it is completed...with your help!!
"Through an exciting new project, the Sabre Trust is aiming to make a major difference to the quality of kindergarten teaching in Ghana. Kindergarten schooling became compulsory in 2007, but historically, the sector has been woefully underfunded: in many communities there are no dedicated classrooms, the children are taught under trees by community teachers who have never received any formal training, and without even basic government funding, no learning resources are available for the children's use.
The case for investing in kindergarten teaching is compelling, with many young Ghanaians beginning primary school without a solid foundation in literacy or numeracy, which in turn leads to high failure rates, and children being held back year after year.
With pro bono support from construction consultants Davis Langdon, and the engineering firm Arup, Sabre have designed a new prototype kindergarten school for Ghana, which will be built on sustainable principles, at low cost, and most importantly in response to the teaching principles contained in the government's curriculum. A pilot school is being built in 2009, and once proven the design will then be rolled out to other communities in the KEEA district where Sabre is based. As well as building new schools, the Sabre Trust is furnishing them with appropriate furniture, supplying teaching and learning materials and supporting the teachers through a classroom based coaching scheme.
Your donation will help to fund the roll out of this new school to rural communities in Ghana, helping to build a better future for school children there."
In September 2009 we will be travelling to Ghana to contribute to this amazing project. We really want to make a difference for the children and be able to provide a solid foundation for them to stay in education. It will also have a positive impact on early education through the new school design.
Your contribution will help the Sabre charitable trust achieve their aim of setting a new standard for Kindergarten school buildings in Ghana incorporating elements of sustainable designs and locally sourced renewable materials.
Thank you in advance for any support you can offer us!!Emma and Steve
