Updated on Mar 27th 2012 at 8:28 AM from the JustGiving API
73% of target for marathon! come on guys....give us a fiver! ;) I've had people donating from all over the world...it's for a great cause and I've got to run 20 miles this weekend! :o
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Yep, my Dad's done 7 (5 London and 2 Dublin) and my Mum's done 6 (3 London, 2 Dublin and 1 in Amsterdam). My sister's done it and my boyfriend's done it! So it's about time really...any guesses yet????
I'm doing the VIRGIN LONDON MARATHON!!!
I did the Great BUPA Birmingham half marathon and although I couldn't walk upright for days afterwards, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I've been lucky enough to have been given a place to run for British Blind Sport whose president is none other than Sally Gunnell OBE! Of course, I'm hoping her skills will reach me by cyber-osmosis!
The training programme is underway. This means getting home after my 2 hour commute from Leicester where I work to resist the urge to lie on the couch and get out and run. I will be running in the cold, dark wintry nights and 4 times a week, building up my running distances from 2 miles to 20!
Since its inception in 1976 in Leamington Spa, British Blind Sport has given blind and partially sighted people the same opportunities as others to keep healthy and improve their self-confidence. Many people run for the big charities and as worthy as they also are, the smaller charities really struggle to raise funds. For the World Ten-pin Bowling Championships last year in Malaysia, each squad member had to raise £2000 to pay for accommodation, travel and kit. These kind of events are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for many and urgently need support. And it's not just for adults. In fact, in the UK, 22,000 children suffer from serious visual impairment and they need to have the same opportunities and access to activities that sighted people take for granted. I am honoured to raise money for even one of these children to have the same opportunities as I did. David Beckham has shown his support (David Beckham salutes Britian’s Paralympians in The Sun, 24 November 2011), so it’s the least I can do!
This is the year of the London 2012 Olympics and this also means the Paralympics. Having worked around the world, I am very aware and proud of the British approach to fostering equal opportunities. Some of the paralympic athletes would not have even reached this level of competition if it weren’t for the support of British Blind Sport. As the Paralympic Games website says:
“Our goal is to create a Games that inspires lasting change in attitudes towards and opportunities for disabled people. Crucially, public support for the Paralympic Games continues to be strong, with more than a third of UK adults believing the Paralympic Games will bring about a breakthrough in the way disabled people are viewed. We are also helping to change attitudes and inspire young people from all backgrounds.”
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
So please dig deep (anything sum is greatly appreciated from a fiver to five hundred!) and donate now!!
Thanks folks! Right I'm off for a run!!....
