Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Technical stuff:
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate they’ll send your money directly to the charity, and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
So please dig deep and donate now. Peter Garrett: How do we sleep…the time has come to pay our share.
Now a bit about myself:
I’m a London lad - from Sutton to be precise, although I now live in my favourite part of the capital, ie. North of the river -and have roots in Yorkshire and Myanmar (formerly Burma). I’m a vegan, and believe that in true democracies fundamental freedoms are accorded to all - including the right to marry, and start a family of one’s own.
I’ve run four previous marathons - mainly in Berlin - and countless half marathons. I’m hoping London will be my fastest yet.
Why WSPA ?
I was lucky in the ballot - and although I’m not looking to raise any minimum - would like to relate to you all why WSPA is worthy of more than those loose pennies you may have lying around. Most of you may realise that charities which focus on animals tend to miss out on government support; what’s often missed is how in the poorest parts of our planet communities are frequently completely reliant on other creatures - whether for food, transport, or as a source of revenue.
WSPA is a global alliance of animal welfare organizations, educating about animal welfare and helping to restore veterinary care in disaster-affected regions, plus dealing with stray dogs by spaying/neutering and vaccinating against rabies. Its activities are too extensive to list in their entirety but they also campaign against cruelties, working with governments to end bear baiting - and the farming of their bile - and ensuring basic care for working horses, mules and donkeys.
WSPA has consultative status at the U.N and the Council of Europe, and in the last year with partner organization Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has succeeded in advancing stronger legislation to combat abuses towards others creatures. At the grassroots it has funded and trained the Bali Street Dog Foundation (http://www.balistreetdogs.com/), and through the Iran Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has worked with the Dept. of Environment in tackling the smuggling of wild animals, providing them with veterinary care and releasing them if appropriate.
And remember, in Costa Rica for instance £25 can run the mobile veterinary clinic for an hour; in this small window of time 100 animals can be vaccinated against rabies, 10 dogs/cats spayed, and 15 more neutered, not to mention the hundred or so people who can be educated and advised on care and sterilization of animals. So shape 2010 as you mean to go on, by giving as much or as little as you can.
Much thanks !
