All money raised through Faiths Act Birmingham Edinburgh Marathon Festival 2012 team will go to help combat Malaria.  Here are some big reasons why we’ve decided to focus on malaria:

v It’s a global problem as half the world’s population is at risk.

v It’s a moral problem because every 45 seconds a child dies from malaria and it’s entirely preventable.

v It’s an economic problem because malaria costs over 12 billion dollars in losses to African nation’s economies.

v It’s a problem of social justice because Malaria is completely preventable and treatable.

Money raised through this fundraising initiative will go to our partner project in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is a country with 126 medical practitioners in a population of over six million. We have over 100 priests, Imams, and other leaders spearheading our campaign to prevent malaria.

Malaria in Sierra Leone:

Malaria kills 33 per cent of children under five in Sierra Leone. This figure can be reduced by the introduction of malaria awareness and prevention methods. In December 2010 the government distributed bed nets throughout the country. Most households do not know how to use them, or how to treat a sick child when they have malaria.

Faiths Act in Sierra Leone

Works by motivating religious leaders to reach out and train people in their local communities (Malaria Faith Champions). Malaria Faith Champions are responsible for going from household to household to educate and teach people about malaria awareness and prevention. We plan to reach over 100,000 homes by June 2012 through the networks and motivation of religious leaders. This translates into thousands of lives saved from malaria through multi-faith action.

Please note none of the funds raised are used to cover costs of the marathon runners, they are funding their own cost regards travel and accommodation in Edinburgh.

100% of funds will go to Africa, none to salaries or overheads.
