It's the 16th century, public transport does not exist, your name is William Shakespeare, and you need to get from your family house in Stratford-Upon-Avon to The Globe Theatre in London. You might wonder how far one of our most famous playwrights would've had to go to get to work. The answer is 146 miles, roughly.
It's now 2009, public transport does exist, in fact there is now a high speed train that can get you from Stratford to London in 7 minutes. Handy, yes, but here begins the tale of 3 young people, embarking on a 146 mile hike, using existing footpaths, bridleways and a few minor roads, following as closely as possible to a route that Shakespeare may have taken on his journeys.
We are raising money for Stratford-upon-Avon's Shakespeare Hospice, which is funded almost entirely by charitable donations. They are an independent local charity providing specialist palliative day care for people living in the Stratford district, living with a life limiting illness. Patients are not charged to receive any of the services, yet the annual running costs are approximately £1,300,000 a year.
The specialist palliative nursing care and support that this charity offers enables patients to continue living at home with their families while receiving active treatment, or for as long as possible when active treatment has ceased. The majority of the patients are living with cancer, but the charity also helps patients with other life-limiting illnesses such as Motor Neurone Disease and AIDS.
Sadly, these illnesses affect all of our lives in some way and I know you, like I, want to help as much as possible.
