My story
Hi everyone!
You may have heard that me and my friend Abbie have been giving an amazing opportunity to do a midwifery placement in Zambia. Something we are both very nervous and very excited about as it will be a real eye opener to the state of Midwifery in Africa. We plan to help empower women, promote skills for preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV and observe the life struggles that affect Zambian people. This has been made possible by the charity PEPAIDS.
Zambia has the highest prevalence of HIV and AIDS in Africa with one in seven adults in the country living with HIV. With this epidemic life expectancy at birth has fallen to just 39 years! PEPAIDS aims to empower Zambia's poorest rural communities with their struggle and prevent the spread of HIV. The high prevalence of HIV in Zambia means that many children become orphans at a very early age. Some have younger siblings to provide for and are the head of their family. These vulnerable children are often faced with entering a vicious circle of sexual abuse, prostitution, forced early marriage and teenage pregnancy, and therefore further increase their risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.
PEPAIDS newest project is to set up and deliver recreational camps for orphans and vulnerable children. The camps will aim to equip children with strategies to cope in daily life, help understand their rights and how they can access help, and provide them with the opportunity to talk to someone they can trust. They also provide an opportunity for fun, freedom and expression, something they will have no access to with their current responsibilities.
The camps provide food and accommodation for a week and the aim is to multiply the camps making them more accessible to the many communities in Zambia. For this reason, they are expensive to run costing £1,000 per week.
Me and Abbie are aiming to raise £1000 in order to help PEPAIDS summon the resources to run one of these camps which are so helpful to the young and vulnerable in Zambia. Sooooooo we have signed up to the Manchester great big swim, a one mile open swim in Salford Quays. It’s going to be hard, it’s going to be cold and it’s probably going to make us ill if we accidently swallow any water!! We would love your support for us and also for this great charity. Any small contribution would be appreciated.
Thanks so much guys.
