*UPDATE*

22nd September 2010

Rose has had her surgery, she is recovering well has passed urine and has eaten, the heart murmur has gone and she should be able to travel home tomorrow.

10th September 2010

Rose has been to see a specialist to asses what exactly she will need to have done. More to follow shortly with news of her operation and recovery.

Thank you so much that have donated and spread the word about Rose.

The fundraising total is inspirational, if we exceed our target we will restrict the funds raised to help any animals that come into our care needing special treatment.

The National Animal Welfare Trust’s Somerset branch launched a fundraising appeal for Rose, a deaf Collie puppy with a major heart defect.

Four and half month old Rose is living on borrowed time.  Rose has just 6 weeks to have corrective heart surgery before she goes into heart failure.  The surgery to close a blood vessel must be performed by a specialist at a cost of £5,000.

The puppy, affectionately named Rose, is a female Collie and was brought into the Somerset centre for re-homing.  Originally bred to be working dog at a busy yard, it soon became clear that Rose cannot hear the large, on-site vehicles and for her own safety she could not remain there.

Hillary Sams, NAWT centre manager said: “Rose’s heart condition was only detected by our resident vet, Alison Hawkes, when she was first brought in.  If she has the corrective surgery in time then she will go on to lead a normal healthy life.

“Unfortunately the family who brought Rose into our Somerset branch simply cannot afford to pay for the surgery.  Rose has such a great personality that we have decided to try to save the puppy as well as re-home her after the surgery.

“If we can raise the £5,000 for the vital heart surgery I’m sure we will be able to find a loving home for Rose who can cope with the extra training required for a deaf dog.”
