I want 2010 to be the year that the people who live around the Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve in southern Malawi really start to benefit from our work there. So I am working with Project African Wilderness to create as many vegetable gardens with local families as possible - the target is 100 at £10 a time.
For the men who work with us at Mwabvi, their waking hours are spent wondering whether not when they will have a meal that day. So it is no surprise that some of them have planted illegal maize crops inside the reserve. And the population is growing so the pressure on the land is worse.
Adele Kerr and her family based at Chipembere just outside Mwabvi are working with the local families and school children to create vegetable gardens next to their homes. As they learn to prepare plant and tend the vegetables, we can talk with them about why we want to protect Mwabvi, how it can benefit everyone. And they are telling us about their land, what they use from the reserve and what they need. From these discussions we have already started a garlic growing group, to try out this new high value low bulk cash crop.
Bottom Line?
£2.50 buys a big pack of seeds for the schoolchildren to grow.
£7.50 buys the tools they need to tend the crops.
£10 buys enough seeds to feed a family of 10 for 4 months. That's also 2 weeks wages.
