Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Just over 5 years ago I was the original couch potato and being more than 5 stones overweight I decided to take part in a 5K run for Cancer Research which I found incredibly difficult, but a very young friend of mine had aggressive breast cancer and I thought if she can go through the rigours of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy then surely I can get round a 5K course. Unfortunately this very dear friend who inspired me to do my very first charity event died on the 10th March 2010. I am just so sorry that the money I have raised over the years for cancer research was unable to help her.
I have also had one family member die of cancer and two undergoing treatment at the moment so it is important to me to try and raise funds so that important research work can continue. Since my first 5K which I had to walk round I have gone on to complete is at least two 5K events every year as well as 10K, half marathon and for the last two years the Moonwalk. It has made a great impact on my own personal health and well-being. I am now 5 stone lighter and the fittest that I have ever been in my life.
Recently I saw the challenge Clatterbridge Cancer Reasearch Taiwan Cycle event to Celebrate 30 years of Clatterbridge Cancer Research and decided to take part. However, the challenge will push me further than I have ever gone in the fitness stakes. It involves cycling 470km over 6 days varying in length. : Day 1 - 40km, Day 2: 90km, Day 3 - 110km, Day 4 - 70km, Day 5 - 60km and the final day is 100km so this will not be easy. Some of the longer days are very arduous and through Mountains and Gorges.
Claterbridge Cancer Research at the JL Laboratories on the Wirral provides world class research for the benefit of people today and future generations. Cancer affects 1 in 3 people, either personally or a loved one, so research into cancer is more crucial than ever.
They recieve no funding from the NHS, so voluntary donations are vital as they require over £2 million to fund the research currently taking place there.
For me this is going to be the biggest challenge that I have undertaken in my life and will push me further in the endurance stakes than I have ever been before - but in terms of what people undergoing treatment have to go through it is a small price to pay. My theory is If those people can can go through the treatment then I can surely do something as challenging as this and it is research centres like this that are providing new an innovative treatments that helps us all.
I would like to raise at least £3,500 and this is where I would like you to help, no matter how small the contribution, every penny is just as important but I would ask that you please give generously.
If you feel able to help me and donate something to this worthwhile cause please do so, please spread the word to family, friends, colleagues or anyone who would be willing to help me – the bigger the circle – the better chance I have of reaching my goal.
I have all sorts of events and fund raising things going on. I am asking everyone I know to buy a tube of smarties and fill it will 20p or if they can afford it £1 coins you will be surprised how much they hold and if I can get 280 people to do this for me I will have my target - so lets hope I can reach this target and even SMASH IT - that would be amazing if I could raise £4,700 - that would be £10 for every km I cycle.
I will keep you all updated with the progress of how my training is progressing and more importantly how the all important target for raising funds is going.
