On 22 May 2010 two teams from Capita Symonds’ Gwent and Glamorgan Offices will be taking part in the REDR Disaster Relief Challenge.

Rhys Hellin, Matthew English, Kirsty Llewellyn, Steve Rusby, Mili Cogswell, Fraser Pullin, Simon Nichols and Katherine Cooper have all voluntered to take part and make a difference.

RedR are an international organisation which selects and trains engineers for humanitarian aid programmes across the world. Capita Symonds became patron of the charity in 2007. The original concept of RedR was to create a register of carefully selected and trained engineers who could be called on at short notice to work with front-line relief agencies, either on secondment from their regular employer or as a full time aid relief worker. The charity which started in the UK, has evolved into an international federation of RedRs that provide training and recruitment services for humanitarian professionals across the world. It has also expanded into other professions such as health, security and logistics.

The REDR Disaster Relief Challenge is a 12 hour event during which teams of 4 will encounter some of the extreme situations faced by aid workers in the field. Competing against other teams they will work together to solve logistical problems, navigate precarious terrain and be tested on how well they respond when faced with critical emergency situations.

Each Team has been asked to raise a minimum of £2000 to take part in the event.

All money raised from this event will help RedR to continue to train, recruit and support relief workers in the UK and around the world, improving the quality and coordination of humanitarian responses to natural disaster and conflict.
