Death-Defying Duo! Once upon a time, in a land far far away from normal civilisation (i.e. Cumbria), there was a little boy called Gareth. Gareth was a happy child, doing all the things a normal little boy does, but one day he fell ill. His parents took him to the doctors but were told he was perfectly fine. He grew sicker and weaker but repeated trips to the doctor had the same result. Persistence by his parents meant Gareth was finally referred to a specialist who diagnosed him with leukaemia. By the time he was admitted to Royal Victoria Infirmiary in Newcastle his condition was grave. If it wasn’t for pioneering new drugs and the support he and his family received from the lovely people at Tyneside Leukaemia Research he may not be here today. Gareth grew up to be a lovely young man (his mum made me say that!) and decided to leave Narnia…erm, I mean Cumbria…and go to university. He packed up his donkey and was waved off by the villagers before travelling to the bright lights of Manchester. Whilst there he met a beautiful, intelligent and modest lady called Sarah who, against her better judgement, loaned him a pen in a lecture one day. The rest they say, is history, and as a token of his appreciation many years later he bought her a Renault 5 (those of you who know what a Renault 5 looks like may be wondering how much she was appreciated!). They decided to drive around Europe in it to raise money for charity on the Screwball Rally. The rally itself starts from Kent and does a round trip through France, Belguim, Germany, Czech Republic, Holland and back to sunny Manchester. All of this takes place from the 14th September and with any luck we will be back in 1 week. The only catch being the vehicle we will be travelling in must be worth less than £750! The Renault 5 seemed like the ideal car for this until one day Sarah called Gareth from the hard shoulder of the motorway to tell him there was smoke coming from the bonnet…….(See photo!). Hence, we are now doing the rally in a 1990 Mercedes 420SEC, bought for £500 by Gareth’s dad and he is hoping it will return in one piece! So you could say that we’ve defied death to be on the rally this year (one in an only marginally more serious way than the other!) and if that’s not worth a quid or two we don’t know what is! The money will be split between Tyneside Leukaemia Research and another brilliant charity called Oldham Personal Advocacy Ltd – OPAL – who Sarah has come into contact with in her capacity as a student social worker. OPAL is a service for people with learning disabilities which provides a number of services including an independent personal advocacy service, employment opportunities through the Big Bad Cake Company, Your Day Your Way day centre and other projects. We will be covering all costs of the rally so any contribution you make will go to the charity. Thanks for your generosity. Sarah & Gareth
