bibic has been able to achieve tremendous things over the past 40 years – transforming the lives of over 14,000 children since its creation - but now, without more help the charity faces a severe financial crisis because of cuts in funding. I would like to share with you my very own personal reasons for doing everything in my power to prevent this from happening.

My youngest son, Iain, was just two years old when he nearly drowned. The oxygen was cut off to his brain and he had severe brain-damage as a result. My blonde-haired, blue-eyed cheerful little boy, who always managed to twist me and everyone he came into contact effortlessly around his little finger, was taken from us. When Iain awoke from his coma he was unable to do anything for himself, but with the help of a specialist charity called the Children’s Trust we started to make good progress.

The whole family were devastated beyond belief when two years later Iain began to deteriorate, and we were heartbroken when we learned that he was coming home for the last time to be with his brother and sister, Andrew and Alison.

I remember feelings of helplessness and frustration that there was nothing I could do to help my little boy. I accept now that the damage was so severe that a full recovery for Iain was never going to be possible but, had he survived, there is no doubt in my mind that we would have turned to bibic for support.

I know how it is to be a parent with a disabled child and to feel lost and alone. How it feels when someone listens and says that they can help. They give you the most important gift of all – hope that you may have a future together, as a family.

I couldn’t save my son and his death broke the hearts of everyone whose life he touched, but I get my strength by working my hardest to raise vital funds and awareness of the work of bibic. I volunteer as a Trustee for the charity and this is my tribute to the son who I only knew for a short time, but who changed my life and those of everyone who knew him.

You can also change the lives of children and their families. This is a plea for help from the bottom of my heart for you to get involved and to make a donation. For the sake of the children who can be helped and the lives that can be transformed beyond recognition, please don’t leave this to someone else.

I don’t want to imagine a future without bibic, where there is no longer the gift of hope. I hope that you can help.
