Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Karen died surrounded by her loving family on the 15th September 2008 two years and nine months after diagnosis, one month before her 53rd birthday. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and I am proud that she was my sister.
Karen faced her illness with a positive attitude and provided support and reassurance to others in her treatment group. I was her 'chemo buddy' and I witnessed the effect she had on other women who were undergoing their treatment for the first time. They would come into the chemo suite very quiet and anxious, she would chat to them, answer their questions and they would quickly relax. Her brilliant sense of humour always ensured that there was lots of laughter.
Karen agreed to have tests to take part in a clinical trial to help in the fight against ovarian cancer but unfortunately her condition deteriorated and she was unable to do so.
We her family will together continue her fight against ovarian cancer by supporting the Eve Appeal.
Carly her daughter recently held a fantastic fund raising event in Hohne Army Base in Germany.
My husband Ian and I are completing the Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk in May 2011 in Karen's memory The walk is at least 192 miles although I'm sure we will lose our way a few times and bump it up to over 200miles. Family and Friends will be supporting us and joining us for part of the walk and I'm sure Karen will be with us in spirit
Gynaecological cancers are the world's fourth largest cancer killer of women.
Every year a million women are diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer worldwide. In the UK, 18,000 women are diagnosed and nearly 7,500 women die every year. And yet, awareness and funding of gynaecological cancers remains low.
The Eve Appeal is determined to change this by funding vital research focused on developing effective methods of prediction, detection, treatment and care that will help save women's lives not only in the UK but throughout the world.
This world-leading research is complicated and challenging but our vision is simple:
A future where fewer women develop and more women survive gynaecological cancers.
