This project will preserve and celebrate the heritage of ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary) and its intrepid pilots (men as well as women) from over 25 countries around the globe. From Friday August 12th you are invited to come and discover their story of courage, skill and sacrifice - but right now you are invited to support our work of preserving their heritage.
We have now raised over £115,000 - many thanks to all donors, especially BAE Systems and the Spitfire Society which has sponsored the Spitfire Simulator through the Leonard Stillwell Bequest Fund. But more donations are still needed in order to put the icing on the cake, including digitising over 60 ATA logbooks and scores of photos. Please can you help us by making a donation today?
At Grandma Flew Spitfires the unique heritage of ATA will be recorded, preserved and celebrated as an integral part of Maidenhead Heritage Centre. Grandma Flew Spitfires will open on Friday August 12th and become a centre of excellence for ATA research, attracting visitors from all over the world, and enthusing the younger generation about all things aeronautical.
Patrons of this Appeal are HRH Prince Michael of Kent GCVO, Rt Hon Theresa May MP (Home Secretary), Mrs Minnie Churchill DL, and AVM Stephen Hiller CBE DFC MA RAF. So you will be in excellent company when you donate to Grandma Flew Spitfires. The project has also been endorsed by the Heritage Lottery Fund with a fantastic grant of £50,000, and we received a grant of £2045 from the Pilgrim Trust for conservation work to leather and sheepskin flying jackets and gloves, which are now installed in the main showcase in the gallery.
So please donate £25 or more to help us preserve the special ATA heritage - there are 10 ATA photos for you to look at on this page and hundreds more in our archives, together with uniforms, flying equipment and over 60 logbooks of ATA aircrew.
All the funds raised through this appeal and this justgiving page will all go towards Grandma Flew Spitfires and associated improvements to the museum building at Maidenhead Heritage Centre - including air conditioning in the Grandma Flew Spitfires gallery.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure, and very useful if you live outside the UK in one of the 25 countries from which the intrepid people of ATA came. All you need is your credit card and you're away. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - and it saves time and cuts costs for Grandma Flew Spitfires and Maidenhead Heritage Centre.
Thank you for your support! Please tell your friends about this appeal - you can share this page with your FACEBOOK friends.
