The event we are going to be doing is a sponsored head shave in aid of children with congenital heart defects. My inspiration behind this is my cousins little boy Tristan Montaque. Tristan was born in June 2007 with a condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). HLHS affects only 1 in 5,000 babies born in the UK every year its one of the most severe heart defects known and one of the most serious resulting in many babies dying before their first year of life. Tristan however has proved he is a little miracle by surviving 5 open heart surgeries in total, and although came close to dying from his condition twice, he still has a cute little smile for us! He is still here and fighting and his mummy Kerry feels very blessed to have him at home after his last and most recent heart operation, he is now fully recovered and coming on very well. The future is unknown with HLHS, the expected life span of hlhs patients is not much older than 15 years of age without a transplant.
Growing up with my Mum being terminally ill with heart and lung disease was hard times not knowing if she would get through it. The doctors gave her 5 years to live when i was 5 years old, but she fought through it and is still here today 23 years on. I look upto her and how strong she is after everything she has been through. And that is why raising awareness for people with heart defects is so important.
Furthermore my boyfriend Scott Jury was born with a hole in the heart and a leaking valve, when he was 18 months old he had his first operation, which involved repairing the hole and the leak over a 4 hour operation which resulted in him going into intensive care, he then started bleeding in his rib cage and had to undergoe a further 4 hours of surgery; if not for this operation before he was 2 years old he would not have lived past 6 years, he is now 23.
For many, they only survive a short time but will always be in our memories, but still we need to raise awareness as not everyone realises the implecations with HLHS. It is important to support families and friends but more so in these situations; so come along to our sponsered head shave, with attending hairdresser Ross will be removing the long awaited hair of Scott, Matt, Jamie and Harley's beard.
