ACE vets resolutely and repeatedly tend to the effects of harness damage, but we need to do more - we need to stop it happening in the first instance.  Most harness related injuries are preventable, on occasions by simply making small re-adjustments to existing harnesses, some problems can be overcome.ACE vets estimate that 70% of treatment administered to horses and donkeys is as a direct consequence of harnesses.  This is regarded as the single most common reason for their suffering and inability to work effectively.   Luxor is an impoverished area where tourism and agriculture are the mainstays of life and where many people still live at subsistence level, relying on local produce cultivated in small plots irrigated by the river Nile.   In Luxor there is a large dependency on working equines (donkeys, mules and horses) that are used for everyday purposes such as transportation, both commercial and private, agriculture and in tourism.      Although ACE treat all animals in need, it is without doubt that horses, mules and donkeys are in the greatest need.  They arrive at a steady trickle throughout the day to be treated for a large array of ailments from collision injuries, caused by close encounters with motor vehicles, and serious injury as a result of inappropriate harness.      Terry & Sue from Harness Aid after a recent visit to ACE observed: "There is a substantial lack of understanding in the basic principles and dynamics of animal draught without which the full potential of working equines cannot be realised.   Without exception, the main difficulty is the misalignment of animal draught that results in a high incidence of harness related back injuries.    This, coupled with heavy, incompatible, unbalanced carts does little for the efficiency or comfort of working equines."    Together with Harness specialists, ACE aim to create a skills training programme in harness design, development and production processes. This designated ACE Harness Project has been put in place, and will specifically fund the setting up of a skills training programme in harness development.  This will benefit both equine and their users.   Equines in the developing world are of major significance where they represent a cheap, self-sustaining, highly efficient energy source.  Unfortunately, they are not used to best effect through lack of knowledge and inappropriate apparatus.   Equines are able and willing workers who, given the correct apparatus, handling procedures and welfare support are able to perform more efficiently, leading to greater productivity from which all can benefit.           ________________________________________________ Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
