We did it!!  Update 05/10/2010

At about the mile 5 marker, I (Harriet) was running with an experienced runner who commented "Running the Clarendon as your first half marathon is like a baptism by fire…If you had chosen any other you could shave 20 minutes off your time due just due to the terrain conditions, its one of the hardest cross country runs in the South!" I was momentarily pleased with this thought until it quickly dawned on me I had another 8 miles to run…

I completed in 2 hours 24 minutes 02 seconds, Karen completed very shortly after me in 2 hours 29 minutes, which is excellent particularly due to 3 weeks prior to the race being injured!!

The course is very beautiful and despite the rain, the MUD and not forgetting ALL the hills, we thoroughly enjoyed it and will look back fondly in the memory of running along one of the countrys finest and oldest foot paths which link two beautiful Cathedrals. It was our first half marathon, and despite the sore muscles, probably worsened from being weighed down with half of Hampshire finest soil attached, it wont be our last!

During the run, thoughts of whether screwing in some of Maddy's large cross country studs could have been a good idea wandered to the support from friends and family world wide, to the main focus, Naomi House Childrens Hospice. To all the children and parents who have suffered beyond that which my imagination allows and in memory of my dear friends who sadly lost their baby boy, Casper, to a rare metabolic disorder this summer.

A huge thank you for all your generous support, in terms of time, the odd coaching tips, the words of encouragement, some which are very amusing and most importantly your extremely generous financial offerings in aid of this very worthy cause.

There has to be a purpose to the last few months of pounding the streets, getting lost in the woods, being soaked wet (not just with sweat) but with mud and rain - exhausting Dot (the dog) neglecting Maddy (the pony) causing injury (minor), recovering from injury.... so to keep our motivation going we needed an aim...

We have entered Clarendon Half Marathon 3 October 2010 - an undulating but possibly beautiful course.....this is a challenge for two beginners, (particularly as the only challenges previously undertaken before have been assisted by a horse carrying oneself!)

After deciding the aim we needed a purpose......please help us to raise awareness and funding towards the children hospice, Naomi House.

The purpose was compounded by the recent and terrible loss of dear friends baby, Casper Wilkes 9 April 2010 to 17 July 2010, who lost his life to a terrible and rare metabolic disorder, he was cared for by the team at Naomi House in his last few days, and we will run also in his memory, please visit  http://casperwilkes.com/ for more information.

Naomi House only receive 7% funding from the government each year so any assistance is appreciated.  To find out more about this wonderful and special place click on the link....
