Its that time of year when I am again taking up the challenge of giving something up for Lent - not as am empty 'religious' exercise, but to do something positive for a cause which is very important to me. My parents started Yeldall Manor as a Drug and Alcohol Rehab centre in 1977 and we lived there for 3 years in my late teens. I now live in the area again and am privileged to serve as a Trustee. Yeldall provides a Christian response to addiction, both drug and alcohol. It is a long-term residential rehabilitation centre. Funding comes from a variety of sources, including both government and individual funding. The residents come to the Manor from all over the UK and have often faced years of addiction. They know that they will have to give up their drugs and alcohol for life. I am only giving up something for the 40 days of Lent, but I do it to stand in support and solidarity with a group of men who face a much bigger challenge. So my part in this will be to give up sweets, candy, cookies/biscuits, cakes and desserts from Ash Wednesday (March 9th) to Easter Sunday (April 23rd). I am seeking 'sponsorship' for my fast.
