On the 16th December I will be leaving the Christmas madness behind me in search of my kind of madness and on the 20th December will be enduring an 11-day trek to Everest Base Camp (5545m/18,500ft) & Kalar Patar.During my trek I'll have a couple of days to rest and acclimatise in the villages of Namche Bazaar (3446m) and Dingboche (4100m).   Before finally making the tough walk to Everest Base Camp (at approximately 5440m).  The following day I have the opportunity to trek a little higher, to Kalar Patar (5545m).  (Providing my legs are still working!!)I'll then spend the next three days retracing my steps back down the mountain to the starting point in Lukla.I have created this page hoping to raise a little money whilst treking to Base Camp.   Your donations will go to DebRA a national charity working on behalf of people in the with the genetic skin blistering condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). http://www.debra.org.uk/.  EB is a rare genetic condition, currently incurable, which causes the skin to blister and shear at the slightest friction, or even spontaneously. In its most severe forms, EB is fatal in infancy and can cause fatal skin cancer in young adults.  However, in its mildest forms it can cause lifelong disability and pain.  EB causes a breakdown in the natural proteins that hold the skin and internal membranes, causing blistering and sores at the slightest touch – or even spontaneously.  Skin blisters have to be lanced and dressed every day – a painful procedure, taking up to 3 hours.Scarily one in 227 of us carry the recessive EB gene and there are 5,000 people living with EB in the and about 500,000 worldwide.  This means that 1 in 17,000 births are affected by EB.DebRA provides an expert team of nurses and social care staff to work directly with families affected by EB, visiting them in their own homes, and by being on 24 hour call should any advice be needed. The charity also commissions world-leading research into the condition with the aim of finding effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for EB. Because DebRA receives no government funding, DebRA relies on the generosity of the public to carry out its vital work, improving lives and giving hope.Tie’s storyTie was born on with severe Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB).  His skin can’t stick together.  He blisters at the slightest knock and his clothes rub constantly.  When Tie is tired and rubs his eyes, he causes additional wounds on his face.Rolling around his bed gives him blisters across his entire body. After drinking he gets blisters in his mouth, down his throat and in his internal lining. When this happens, he struggles to eat or drink. His blisters need to be constantly lanced by a needle then dressed to keep infection at bay.Tie’s parents hope that one day it will be safe for them to give Tie a hug without worrying about the damage they could do to his fragile body. What your donation could provide…£2.50           ‘Scratch Mitts’ to prevent a baby born with EB from tearing their own skin.£5                a set of easy grip chunky pens to help children hold a pen when their fingers are fused together from repeated scarring.£10              a tube of ‘no sting medical adhesive remover’ to help ease the pain of dressing changes.£25              one hour of research to bring us closer to finding an effective treatment for EB.£150            a pressure relief mattress to relieve the discomfort of sleeping.£500           a home air conditioning unit.  Imagine how uncomfortable it is in warm weather when your body is tightly wrapped in bandages.  An air conditioning unit is essential apparatus to help keep the skin cool.£1,000         support for a child with EB, providing a range of equipment as it is required such as special bed linen, adapted buggies, food blenders, specialist footwear and many more items to bring comfort and relief.£3,000        a special cot for an EB child at home.£10,000      support for our 3 mobile homes for a year – giving a great many children with EB and their families a much needed holiday break.£50,000      specialist nursing care in the for one year.£100,000    funding for one of our skin cancer research programmes for 6 months.Every donation received, large or small, is important and makes a real difference to the charity’s work.  The money is used as it is received to provide practical and immediate help to the EB community.  So please dig deep, support my madness and donate to a worth while cause.  All donations will be greatly appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.H x
