Mark and Helen Mortimer are running the Goring 10k on Sunday, 6 March, 2011 to raise funds for Westgate College for Young People, part of The John Townsend Trust.
We are fund raising for a School and now charity that has supported Mark's son Alex for over 15 years. Alex is now 21 years old and a student at Westgate College in Kent for young adults most of whom require a high level on day to day support. Full independence for many will never be reached. Disabilities are wide ranging. As some of you will recall in Alex’s case he is profoundly deaf, with autism and learning difficulties. Other students may have associated blindness and /or severe physical handicap/ mental handicap.
The John Townsend Trust is a new charity which was registered in December 2008. It was formerly the Royal School for Deaf Children Margate. The Trust provides education, care, therapy, medical support and independence training for young deaf people with additional needs. They strive to release the potential for each individual by building confidence and independence skills and letting them know that they are valued, special and cared for. Specific examples are that Alex has worked Superdrug, McDonalds, an old people’s home, and on their own farm. This has provided him with confidence and improved his self-esteem.
Once the children become young adults, the trust will provide supportive housing which again fosters at least an element of semi-independence and individualism in contrast to institutional care.
