Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
As you may have gathered (especially if you have got to this page via www.roonforimprovement.com) in a brief moment of inspiration/madness (delete as applicable) we decided to take part in the Africa Rally 2009 as Team "Roon for Improvement".
What is the Africa Rally?
In short it is a drive starting from Hyde Park in London on 13 December 2009 to Limbe in Cameroon (with an end of rally party on 10 January 2010). It should therefore take about a month to get to Cameroon. There is no official route or back-up along the way to make things that little bit more exciting!
In fact the only rule is regarding the type of vehicle you can use to take part. It has to be of 1 litre engine size or less and left hand drive (because the car will be auctioned for charity on arrival in Cameroon and local laws state that all cars must be left hand drive).
In compliance with this rule and having finally discounted taking a rickshaw or stretch golf buggy, we purchased a 1989 left hand drive 964CC Citroen AX. You can see photos of the car on our website above.
THE IMPORTANT PART
Whilst being a bit of an adventure for us, there is a serious side to the Africa Rally. There are three official charities that all do valuable work in Cameroon and who will benefit from money raised by this event. Events such as the Africa Rally organised by www.theadventurists.com have now raised £1 Million for charity.
We also hope you agree that a 6000+ mile drive, via Europe, crossing the Sahara and going via Timbuktu is no small undertaking as well as being for some worthwhile causes. We want to raise a minimum of £1000 but would dearly love to raise more so we hope you are able to donate. Any amount is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your kind contributions!
