My story
Dear All,
I would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated! I really didn't think I was going to make anywhere near my target but I have and surpassed my wildest expectations. That of course is all thanks to you guys.
FTI was extremely grateful for the money we raised and it will go towards supporting their massive task, which is to protect people's right to a fair trial.
I hope you are all well and that the donation wasn't too much of a financial burden. For me, life is sweet. I am now living the dream in Brussels, working for no money... (not quite the dream) But I hope it won't be too long until I start a job in EU policy development with an awsome NGO.
I hope I see some of you guys soon so that I ask for help for my next fundraising adventure.
Take care all and thank you so much again.
Jenna
So as some of you may know, on the 11th March I will be participating in the Bath Half marathon and by doing so hope to raise lots of monies for the human rights charity, Fair Trials International (FTI).
FTI is a unique human rights charity that helps people uphold their right to a fair trial when arrested abroad. For people arrested in a country other than their own (many of who are unaware of the local laws or know where to turn to for help) the chance of injustice is enormous. FTI provides vital advice, assistance and referrals to local lawyers to help people protect their fair trial and defence rights. Primarily, FTI is working towards fulfilling its vision of a world where every person’s right to a fair trial is respected, whatever their nationality, wherever they are accused.
Travelling outside our own country, whether it's for studies, work or pleasure, is a common feature in most of our lives. If things go wrong, we could find ourselves arrested and imprisoned in a country where we know little about the language, let alone its complicated legal system. In this situation, we are more likely to have our defence rights violated, which can result in an unfair trial. FTI deals with hundreds of cases ever year where people have been denied basic rights, such as access to a lawyer and interpreter, or have spent prolonged periods of time in pre-trial detention, without being told of the charges against them. There are many countries that have little, if any, restrictions on the time someone can spend in pre-trial detention; I was shocked when I found out that people can be imprisoned in Spain for up to 4 years before they face trial! Can you even begin to imagine what it would be like to be locked up for 4 years, with little or no knowledge about the charges being brought against you. In this type of situation FTI could provide essential information about the criminal proceedings in that country and your legal rights.
FTI is an extremely small charity for the level of work it faces. It is able to keep its expenditure low and maximise its funds through the support of many volunteers. FTI is always grateful for the funds it receives as it enables them to continue providing their vital services.
If like me you believe there are certain human rights that should never be undermined, no matter what, then Please donate whatever you can to support the work that FTI does. I have set a target of £750 (Aim High!) because I’m sure I know enough people who care about these issues as much as me and are willing to dig deep to support FTI.
You never know when you or a loved one might be abroad and in need of legal advice and assistance.
