Introduction:
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Between 30 August - 5 September, I will be taking part in a climb of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. The trek will involve a tough uphill ascent and descent (70 kms) spread across 4 days.
In completing this challenge, I have chosen to support the St Luke's Hospice, Plymouth. The Hospice serves a number of patients across the West Country.
The Hospice was founded in 1982 and is a registered charity dedicated to providing highly specialised palliative and end of life care for patients who have terminal or life-limiting illnesses. The Hospice also offers support to the families and loved ones of its patients.
St Luke's vision is to help patients achieve the best possible quality of life by giving them dignity and choice at a time in their lives when they may feel they have none. The Hospice costs more than £5 million each year to run. Government funding is extremely limited so each year at least £3.5m must be raised within the local community.
Personal Experience:
There have been a number of recent enquiries and press coverage into what is termed "end-of-life" care. This is not an area of high priority on the Government's agenda and many hospices, such as St Luke's relay on local fund raising. The quality of care that St Luke's offers to its patients is tremendous. They also provide invaluable support to loved ones who are going through a very painful process.
