Jackie Smith died on Friday 7 August 2009.  Jackie's Bone Marrow was working well, but she suffered significant transplant side effects (GvHD). On 1 August at home Jackie suddenly became very ill. She was immediately taken into Intensive Care and given maximum life support treatment.  Sadly Jackie was unable to make a second miraculous recovery.

A Thanksgiving Service was held on 19 August. Jackie's family were very pleased to see so many friends and colleagues attend to recognise Jackie's life and achievements. Many of you have made second donations in lieu of funeral flowers. Your generosity is very much appreciated.

We hope to raise £20,000 for essential GvHD research into better treatments, reducing Bone Marrow Transplant side effects and offering better survival rates.

After that we will continue with further offline fundraising activities (e.g. Jackie’s CookBook).

Please do contact me with any other fundraising ideas which will be welcomed.

Jackie was diagnosed with Leukaemia on 21 December 2004.

In the past 4 years we were able to enjoy some special times together and for that we thank:

·      Wonderful doctors, nurses, physios at the John Radcliffe & Churchill Hospitals

·      Supportive and loving friends, some of very long standing, in the UK and overseas

·      Like minded colleagues who shared Jackie's professional passion for the patient

With the excellent Doctors and Nurses at the John Radcliffe Hospital (JRH) in Oxford, we have been fighting Jackie’s Leukaemia for the past 4 years. In 2008, Consultants told Jackie that she needed a Bone Marrow Transplant.

On September 11, 2008 (anniversary of 9/11), as part of the Transplant procedure, Jackie had a transfusion of stem cells from a willing USA donor. The JRH in Oxford is a major UK centre for Bone Marrow Transplants and they have provided excellent treatment to Jackie and other patients from a wide area.

A major complication of a Bone Marrow Transplant is called Graft vs. Host Disease (GVHD). This occurs where cells from the donor attack the patient’s body. It can be very severe and result in death. Two of our friends, both bright young men, Rupert (21) and Nelan (19), tragically have not survived.

To improve the chance of survival for Leukaemia / Transplant patients, the JRH needs £50,000 to research into the best treatments for GVHD.  Jackie’s husband has committed to raising funds for this vital research.
Stewart ran the Marathon; support brilliant; crowds fantastic; temp a bit too warm; time 5h 31m; OK in those conditions & 14 years after my previous marathon; not a PB but reasonably "comfortable" and a great experience; painful legs for a few days!!!

Please make a Donation via JustGiving - it's easy and secure.
GvHD Research, part of Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Charitable Funds, gets your money direct and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, receives 28% Gift Aid.

Please also join our fundraising efforts by forwarding our appeal to all your friends, relatives and colleagues. In turn, please ask them to forward it to all their friends, relatives and colleagues; this way we have a chance to reach our target.
