Update: Had a great time swimming the Brooklyn Bridge NYC. Swim time: 21 mins 51 secs (1km). Thank you for your support!
After many months following the tragic dolphin drives in Taiji and the Faeroe Islands imagine how mortified I am to learn that one of just two precious populations of bottlenose dolphins resident in UK waters is about to come under threat from potential oil and gas exploration despite residing in a Special Area of Conservation. Please take some time to meet the dolphins of Scotland's Moray Firth.
Two (as yet un-named) companies are seeking permission to conduct seismic surveys of Scotland's Moray Firth as a potential site for drilling; this includes the Special Area of Conservation created to protect this particular population of bottlenose dolphins. It is likely that the UK government may grant permission for these surveys. The immediate negative effect on the dolphins living in this area is the high level noise these surveys create. High level noise seriously disrupts the ability of dolphins to echolocate food and to communicate whilst the long term negative effects are as yet unknown.
The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society 'Protect Our Dolphins' campaign has both immediate and long term goals. It is currently battling to protect this Special Area of Conservation by asking the government to honour its responsibilities both now and for the future. NYC Brooklyn Bridge Swim (30th July 2011)
I am aiming to raise a minimum of £450.00 for the Protect Our Dolphins campaign by participating this year's NYC Brooklyn Bridge Swim a 1km open water swim from Manhattan to Brooklyn under the Brooklyn Bridge. This event will be a challenge for me. Not only will it be my first ever swimming event but my first ever open water swim!
For the dolphins!
I hope you feel inspired to take an interest in the plight of this special and much treasured population of bottlenose dolphins as well as other whale and dolphin species and wildlife in the Moray Firth. The UK is lucky in that it is free of captive whale and dolphin industries and that we are blessed instead with resident bottlenose dolphins in UK waters! Please give generously to protect a rare non-invasive opportunity to see them in the wild ...
