Hey guys, and girls! Men...and women! I am James Hulme and I'm raising money for my gap year placement with Lattitude Global Volunteering. I have always been interested in the environment, and I wanted to see some of the world before going to university, so I decided that I would try and find a way of combining them both!
As a result, I came upon 'Lattitude,' who offer a range of placements across the world!
Who are Lattitude and what will I be doing?
To quote their website, "Gap years have been Lattitude's thing for over 35 years. We are the Gap Year volunteering charity and we have gap years in 17 countries around the world"
They help young people aged 17-25 help the world through a range of activities including conservation and teaching in third world countries.
As many of you know, I am going to New Zealand and Australia, but what you may not know is that I will be doing 18 weeks of conservation work. Starting in Christchurch, New Zealand, I will be completing 6 weeks of conservation work before having a week of independent travel. Moving on to Melbourne, Australia, I will complete another 6 weeks of conservation work and then have another week off to relax and explore the country. Following Melbourne I will head northwards to Sydney. Another 6 weeks of conservation work there and then I will travel for a short time before returning home!
Conservation? What exactly is that?
I have repeatedly mentioned conservation, but what exactly is it? Conservation in my case, is the preservation of the natural environment of the specific areas I will be working in. Whilst my placement states I am in the city, I will be travelling to more remote areas to undertake various tasks such as:
-Path building
-Tree planting
-Animal monitoring
Generally physical tasks, they are the work that needs to be done to help preserve the unique habitat of Australia and New Zealand so that it is not lost forever through increasing visits by tourists and the harmful effects of climate change.
I will be working 4-5 days a week, with the weekend to be spent at my own leisure.
Why do I need your money?
Whilst I am covering the costs of my food and accommodation arrangements, the flights amount to over £1000, and your help with meeting these costs would be much appreciated! The main cost is the 1-2 day trip from home to New Zealand, and then back from Sydney in July, but there is also the travel between placements!
What will I be doing to give you a little incentive to donate?
Ever the adventurous and foolish one, I have decided to:
-Cycle 20 miles in my Spiderman outfit along the North Wales coastline for the general amusement of the public!
I will do this at some point in early December, date to be confirmed!
Thank you for reading, many of you will be in university, but even the smallest donations will help.
Just donating the cost of a pint or two would go a long way to helping me get to New Zealand and Australia...and back!
James Hulme
