In July this year I set off to Malawi to work for 6 weeks in Rumphi District Hospital as part of my degree.

Malawi is the 8th poorest country in the world but I was overwhelmed by the friendliness and generousity of the people I met who welcomed me into their homes and treated me with great kindness.

The work was arranged with the help of the charity Feet First which was set up by consultant in orthopaedics and trauma Mr Steve Mannion. Under Steve's guidance teams of health professionals are assembled and taken to a variety of developing countries to perform treatments and train local staff.

Steve and his team joined me for a week and I assisted him during a number of operations such as correction of knock knee deformity, release of burns contractures and restoration of function in hands, and removal of chronically infected bone from an arm that could well have proved fatal.

I was so inspired by this work that I hope to return again with Steve once qualified.
