My story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my page. I am going to attempt to swim the channel in a relay team in late July. It is known as the Everest of swimming challenges appropriately enough given the comparative likelihood of success! For further details click 'Read More'. I'm doing this for the Zimbabwe Rural Schools Development Programme of which I'm a trustee. As the name suggests we raise cash for building and kitting out schools. I last went out to Zimbabwe a year ago. You can see a short video from this trip to give a flavour for what we do through the link on the left or click on our homepage. Thank you very much for your support!

More detail on what I'll be doing

1. Channel swim (July 23rd-29th):

I will be crossing the channel in a team of six taking turns to swim one hour legs. The major challenges here are:

- The temperature: The channel will be anywhere between 13-16 degrees Celsius on the day. Normal pool temperature is 25-28 degrees. No wetsuits are allowed which makes recovery from the cold the most critical factor to success.

- The swell: A relatively flat day will see waves of 2-3 feet in the middle of the channel. More on a windy day. The Channel is the busiest stretch of shipping lanes in the world which creates a fair amount of chop as well.

- The tides: In a straight line it is 21 miles tip to tip but due to the tides we will be swimming in along an S-Curve anywhere between 24 and 30 miles on the day.

- Swimming in the dark: We are likely to start the day at about 4-5am before sunrise.

Our target is to cross in less than 14 hours which will mean my swimming 3 one hour legs. We have a window of one week from 23-29 of July due to variation in weather, tides and waves.

2. Enduro challenge (August 26th-August 30th): If we are unsuccessful in our crossing or unable to make it in the window I will take part in the Enduro challenge (if selected for the team that Accenture is entering). This is a triathlon relay from London to Paris in a team of six. This includes running a relay to Dover in stages of 10km, the channel swim as above and a cycling relay to Paris in stages of 30km. This is an annual race that Accenture are putting a team in for the first time. We are up against lots of competitive types from the world of capital market - UBS, Credit Suisse etc - so it it is being taken pretty seriously!

In case that I can't do either of the above two events - which is possible given the dependency on conditions - I will complete a half ironman over the bank holiday weekend. A swim of 2km (easy!), a bike ride of 98km and a half marathon to finish.
