Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Back in April, my family and I were woken in the early hours by two policemen who informed us that my father, Mark, had been involved in a ‘life threatening accident’ on his motorbike whilst on his way home from work. A car driving on the wrong side of the road hit my father head on, with his legs taking the full force of the collision. He was rushed to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, South London, where he was in and out of theatre, as they tried to stabilise him and save his lower limbs.

An artery in his right leg was severed and after six hours in theatre with no circulation to the leg, with the stabilising of other vital organs more critical, he was left in intensive care for two weeks. Those early weeks saw numerous further operations to both legs, his arms, and skin grafts all complicated by damage to his kidney. We are immensely thankful for the skill of the surgeons and nursing staff at St George’s for the care he has so far received; he couldn’t, we believe, have been in a better hospital.

The next stage is for a further major operation in eight weeks time which will determine whether or not the leg requires amputation at the knee. We all pray this will not be necessary although the knee will require reconstruction if it can be saved. Dad has returned home, which has been adapted downstairs, and although confined to bed it has kept his spirits high and with constant in home care.

Throughout his ordeal my father, and indeed my mother, have remained positive about the future and he complains about nothing (or very little!!). During many visits from family and friends he says how it is worse for our servicemen and women abroad who risk their lives daily and many of whom have had legs and arms amputated. Indeed he feels so strongly that I contacted H4H to see how we could show our support for all our armed forces who are affected by wars abroad, to recognise the care he has received in hospital so far.

This brings me to the event which we have already started planning for. A 1000 mile bike ride is not to be taken lightly and will be a real test of fitness for us normal guys in our mid twenties.

We are cycling from John O'Groats to Lands End between 12th July 2013 and aim to finish on 23rd July 2013.

So please dig deep and donate now and Help our Heroes!!!
