The Just a Survivor book project

On the 26 of December 2004 the Norwegian author Jan Faye Braadland, his wife Essi Frydenlund, their daughter Karoline and her boyfriend Patrick fought for their lives after being swept away by the monster tsunami wave that hit the paradise island of Koh Hong in Thailand. Miraculously all four survived with only minor injuries. Many people died on the island that terrible day, while others were injured for life, among these was Fiona Callanan, an amazing person and supporter of  The Cambodia Trust.

Ever since the monster wave struck and Braadland landed at the top of  a mangrove tree several meters above ground level near the beach he has struggled to find words and expressions for describing the indescribable. Two years ago he eventually decided to take action and write a book about what he had experienced from that day up to now. His book Bare en overlevende (Just a Survivor. Text and images in a post tsunamic perspective) is officially published in Oslo, Norway on 24 of August 2009.

By mixing dramatic prose, poems and facts accompanied by his wife’s gripping photographs he has managed to create a beautiful book on a very serious topic, being a survivor from the biggest and most devastating natural disaster of our time. The book has turned out to be a poetic, literary and visual adaptation of a real event but also a description of  the human costs following in the wake of such a cathastrophic experience.

The author of the book also played a small part in saving Fiona Callanan's life on Koh Hong Island in Thailand. Inspired by her strength of will and her efforts to help other people as supporter Jan Faye Braadland has decided to donate 10% of his royalties from the Just a Survivor book project to The Cambodia Trust. He urges other authors to do the same.
