Story

I am raising funds for Crawford House at the RVI in Newcastle. They provided accommodation for me and Fynley’s mum in November 2011. He was born in the Wansbeck hospital in Ashington, but due to complications, he was not breathing when he was born. This meant a specialist had to be airlifted from the RVI for a diagnosis. He took his first breath after 15 minutes. The specialist thought he could have brain damage because of the long time without oxygen. He said the best course of action would be for him to spend time in the Red Zone at the RVI to be refrigerated to prevent brain damage. This meant he was blue lighted there and we followed him down. Living 60 miles away meant we couldn't stay with him for the week. Thankfully a space came up in Crawford House, which allowed us to be with him while he received treatment. Gail the Manager, was more than helpful, and provided everything we needed for the time we stayed there.

The event I am doing to raise money is the Tough Mudder challenge. It is a 12 mile assault course. It involves all sorts of obstacles, including Arctic Enema, which involves wading neck height through ice water, Boa Constrictor, which is negotiating through a pipe not much larger than your body, so you can’t really move, and it has freezing cold mud in it also, Fire Walker, which is as it says, walking through fire, Kiss of Mud, which is crawling on your stomach through mud with barbed wire above you to stop you getting off your chest, Underwater Tunnels, which is having to swim under obstacles in a tank, Electroshock Therapy, which is running through jellyfish-like 10,000 volt electrified tentacles, and many more. It cost me £80 to enter, and for that, you get a headband at the end, and to say that you have completed a Tough Mudder Challenge.

I am looking to raise £1000 for Crawford House doing the event

I am 27, and a concrete plant manager in Berwick upon Tweed. I enjoy going to the gym when I'm not spending time with my son, who has made great progress with his milestones, and is now 18 months old. I have never tried anything like this before, but always been an admirer of people who have done them. I feel in great shape, I have lost over a stone training for the event, and I am now trying to put a little back on by training for strength.

About the charity

The Sick Children’s Trust is the charity that gives families with a seriously ill child in hospital a comfortable place to stay and a friendly ear to listen in one of our ten ‘Homes from Home’. By providing families with somewhere to stay near their child they have one less thing to worry about.
